Well, I’m not positive, but this might be the last blog post we get to write for awhile. We are backpacking as light as we can during our trip across the world, so we aren’t bringing a computer. Not to worry though, we will try to post pictures via Facebook whenever we get a chance. We depart Korea on March 2nd, and our first stop is Beijing, China. We are excited about seeing the Great Wall! Our next stop is Hong Kong. I’m very excited about catching up with a dear friend who is currently living there! We are very excited about the time we will have in Vietnam. Our travels in Vietnam mostly include the Northern part of the country, but we will also make it down to Ho Chi Minh for a few days. We are very excited about spending time at Bykota House in Cambodia. Mark and Rhonda Benz founded Bykota House. We are so inspired by their story that we want to share it with you all.
“Having our hearts turned towards Cambodia through an international adoption, we were all burdened by the conditions we found the children living in at the orphanages we visited. After returning home with the two children we adopted both Mark and I were not released from the memory of children not yet adopted. At first we tried to work from our home in Missouri to improve the conditions at these orphanages. However, we quickly realized that to effect lasting change someone needed to be there, eyes, hands and feet on the ground, in Cambodia. Following our announcement to our families and friends of our plans, we began forming partnerships for the work in Cambodia. We moved our family to Cambodia in October, 2004. Since then our vision has grown and so has our family with the adoption of three additional children.
The Lord has blessed the work of our hands in establishing our own children’s home, Bykota House, and later a private school, School Of The Nations.
Above all else we desire to live a life which is pleasing to our Lord and to daily walk in obedience. We are blessed to share with you how God is moving in Cambodia. James 1:27a tells us “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this; to look after orphans and widows in their distress…” for us the words “to look after” means to care for in the same manner as one’s own child.
We invite you to come alongside us in this journey and become a partner today!”
After Cambodia, we will have a short, one-day layover in Singapore. We are looking forward to taking advantage of the free city tours offered by the airport! Thailand is up next. We are really looking forward to relaxing and recharging our batteries while soaking up some summer sunshine. Possibly one of the most exciting adventures of our trip will take place in Nepal. We will do a solo trek to the Mt. Everest Base Camp! It’s about an 80 mile round-trip trek. Due to altitude adjustments, it normally takes about 10 days to trek to the base camp, and 5 days to trek back. After Nepal, we will stop over in India. We are excited about seeing the great Taj Mahal. We are thrilled about our adventures in Turkey. The Pamukkale hot springs are a definite must-see for us. Throughout our time in Europe, we plan on doing a lot of camping. We’ve heard that beach camping in Greece is especially nice. We will work our way through eastern Europe to Croatia. This part of the trip we plan on winging-it and going with the flow! We hope to do some coastal trekking while in Italy, as well as visiting Rome together. After Italy, our plans include a quick stop over in Paris…And a quick stop over in London before heading back to the USA.
Have you been to any of these places? What are your recommendations?
